I have always been a fan of shelter adoptions or rescue organizations. As you may know, my father, John A. Hoyt served as the President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States for more than 27 years during his working career. During that time, the he coined a phrase, "Until there are none, adopt one." I live by that motto today.
I congratulate the State of Florida on its recognition of April as Adopt a Shelter Pet Month. Each year we euthanize millions of family pets that are unwanted as there just are not enough homes to go around.
Please do your part. Adopt or rescue a pet before ever buying a puppy, kitten, cat or dog from a pet store. Pet stores are supplied primarily by breeding mills, referred to as "puppy mills" - despite the fact they may say they only buy from "breeders." They do buy from breeders, but not reputable ones and not ones that care about the over population of pets in this world.
Remember, "until there are none, adopt one."
