Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona
What a great weekend to be at the Daytona International Speedway for the 49th running of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. As you know, we recently acquired an RV. I'm trying to think of fun ways to use our new toy - I've already been on several horseback riding trips, which is it's primary purpose. But I also wanted to think of fun things to do without horses.
I have always loved NASCAR racing - mostly on TV, but I've attended a couple of what used to be the Firecracker 400, now the Pepsi 400 or something. So when friend, John Crockenburg suggested we consider the 24 Hours Race, I was in!
We got a great spot, Yellow 226. We were in this enclave of RVs, only one way in and one way out so not a lot of traffic. We were sandwiched in right between the chicane and the hi bank first turn. We could see the whole length of the infield track.
The roar of the engines was fabulous - although I have to admit it took a few hours after we got home for the ringing in my ears to wear off. What made it even more fun for me was Patrick Dempsey of Grey's Anatomy fame had two teams in the race - he even drove himself! I also got a glimpse of him at the fan autograph signings.
There were also some NASCAR drivers - most notably Jimmie Johnson who hoped to tie A.J. Foyt's record of winning both the Daytona 500 and the Rolex 24 Hours. Unfortunately, he didn't achieve his dream this year.
Basically the 24 Hours race is a great big all night party. Lots of food, fun and new friends. We met all kinds of fun and interesting people, all welcoming and helpful to us newbies.
We plan to go back next year. Look for us!
